What is UNBell?
UNBell is a compact, adjustable training system designed to work as both a traditional balanced weight and an UNBalanced training tool.
Unlike a conventional dumbbell or kettlebell, UNBell allows you to change not only how much weight you are lifting, but also where that weight is positioned. By moving UNBars from side to side or front to back, you can change the balance, leverage and feel of an exercise without changing the total weight.
How much does UNBell weigh?
The unloaded UNBell body weighs approximately 5.5 lb.
Weight is added using removable solid-steel UNBars, allowing you to build UNBell from a lightweight starting configuration to approximately 72 lb, depending on the handle and loading configuration being used.
What are UNBars?
UNBars are the removable zinc plated solid-steel weights used to load UNBell.
UNBell uses two types:
Square UNBars (4lb) are primarily used to add weight and can be positioned throughout the UNBell to create balanced or intentionally UNBalanced loading.
Hex UNBars (3.5lb) add weight while also providing anti-rotation suitable for an additional handle and serve as the connector for compatible external handle configurations.
How many UNBars can be loaded at one time?
The max recommended load out when using UNBell in dumbbell mode is 10 square and 3 hex for a maximum of 56lbs. This assumes 3 bars are removed for hand access to the central handle.
When utilizing the external handle you can add the full allotment of 12 square and 4 hex. This brings the max weight to around 72lbs. Adding a second external handle brings the max to 76lbs.
What size is UNBell?
The main UNBell body is approximately 8.25" L × 7.75"W x 9.5"H, making it considerably more compact than storing multiple fixed dumbbells and kettlebells covering a similar weight range.
Standard UNBars are 9" long and the center handle is 8" long with a 6" knurled center.
What materials is UNBell made from?
UNBell was designed around materials selected for strength, durability and repeated training use.
The primary components include:
- Solid-steel UNBars with a zinc-plated finish
- Impact-modified PC/ABS side plates, a durable engineering material also commonly used in automotive applications
- Steel center handle
- Steel external handle components and mounting plates
- Mechanical locking components designed to securely retain the UNBars during use
Can UNBell be used like a normal dumbbell?
Yes. Load the UNBars evenly and UNBell functions as a balanced adjustable dumbbell.
You can then move individual UNBars to different positions to introduce progressively greater levels of UNBalanced loading.
Note that depending on how the UNBell is held even a balanced load can have heavier perceived feel because of the different leverage points created when the UNBars are loaded front to back.
Can UNBell be used like a kettlebell?
Yes. UNBell's removable external handle converts the system for kettlebell-style exercises and other movements where additional handle clearance is desirable.
The external handle attaches through UNBell's hex-bar locations, which help prevent rotation and securely locate the handle.
Add a second external handle and unlock even more exercise options.
Hex and the external handles also work well for elevated pushups and dips.
Do I have to train UNBalanced?
Not at all.
UNBell can be loaded symmetrically for traditional balanced resistance training or asymmetrically for UNBalanced training. You decide how much — or how little — imbalance you want for each exercise.
Assembly & Setup
Does UNBell require assembly?
Only minimal assembly.
The primary UNBell arrives largely assembled. You simply need to attach the D-profiled Center Handle to one Side Plate with the supplied hex screw.
What tools do I need to assemble UNBell?
Just one 5/16-inch Allen key.
No specialty tools are required.
Is assembly difficult?
No. UNBell was designed so the primary components locate naturally in their intended positions.
Parts should fit together without excessive force. Do not force components into place or use UNBell if any component cannot be properly seated and secured.
How do I add or remove weight?
UNBars slide into the designated pockets in the UNBell body.
Unscrew the UNlock knob to release a side plate so UNBars can be added, removed or repositioned. Once you have selected your configuration, securely tighten the UNlock knob before beginning your exercise.
Can UNBars move while UNBell is secured?
No.
When UNBell is properly secured, the UNBars are mechanically captured within their pockets and cannot be repositioned until the UNlock knob is released.
How do I know UNBell is ready to use?
Before every exercise:
- Confirm all UNBars are completely seated.
- Make sure the UNlock knob is fully secured.
- Confirm the handle being used is properly secured.
- Check the UNBell for any visible damage.
Never begin an exercise with UNBell partially assembled or unlocked.
UNBalanced Training
What does "UNBalanced training" mean?
UNBalanced training means intentionally positioning resistance away from the natural center of the implement.
With UNBell, you can move weight:
- Left or right
- Forward or backward
- Into combinations of both
That changes the center of mass and the leverage you must control during an exercise.
Why would I intentionally move the weight off-center?
Changing the location of the load can change how your body must stabilize and control the same movement.
Instead of only asking, "How much weight am I lifting?", UNBell lets you also ask, "Where is the weight?"
This gives you another way to progress, modify or challenge an exercise without simply adding more pounds.
Can I make small changes in balance without adding weight?
Yes. This is one of the primary differences between UNBell and conventional adjustable weights.
You can keep the total weight exactly the same and simply reposition one or more UNBars to change the leverage and balance of the exercise.
Can I still perform traditional exercises?
Absolutely.
UNBell can be used for many familiar dumbbell and kettlebell movements. Balanced loading allows conventional training, while repositioning the UNBars introduces additional training options.

UNBell manufacturing and processing are performed through U.S. manufacturing partners in Michigan and the Chicago, Illinois area, with final components brought together as part of our U.S.-based production and fulfillment process.
Is UNBell made in the USA?
UNBell is manufactured and processed primarily through U.S. partners in Massachusetts, Michigan and Illinois.
Because certain raw materials or individual inputs may originate outside the United States, we prefer to be specific about where the actual manufacturing and processing take place rather than make an overly broad origin claim.
Where is UNBell designed?
UNBell was developed by 44 Fitness LLC in Massachusetts.
Handles & Accessories
What is the external handle for?
The external handle creates additional clearance between your hand and the UNBell body, making it useful for kettlebell-style movements, two-handed exercises and exercises where a different leverage point is desirable.
It also adds approximately 4 lb to the loaded weight of the system.
Do I need the external handle to use UNBell?
No.
UNBell can be used directly from its center handle without any external handle.
The external handle simply expands the types of grips, exercises and loading configurations available.
Can I use two external handles?
Yes. Compatible configurations can use two external handles for certain two-handed movements and alternative grip positions.
Are all UNBars compatible with every UNBell?
Yes. UNBell was designed as a system.
UNBars purchased separately can be added to your existing UNBell so you can increase your available weight and loading combinations over time.
Care & Safety
Do I need to perform any maintenance?
UNBell requires very little maintenance.
Keep the locking areas and UNBar pockets free of excessive dirt or debris and periodically inspect the handles, fasteners, side plates and locking components.
Wipe side plates and clean with mild soap and water. Do not use any abrasive cleaners or chemicals.
Can UNBell rust?
The steel UNBars are zinc plated to help protect the steel surface.
As with other steel fitness equipment, prolonged exposure to moisture, sweat or harsh environments should still be avoided. Wiping the equipment dry after use will help preserve its finish.
Can I drop UNBell?
UNBell is designed as strength-training equipment, but it should not be intentionally dropped or thrown.
Repeated impact can damage fitness equipment regardless of material. Always use UNBell under control and inspect it before use if it experiences a significant impact.
What if I notice a crack or damaged component?
Stop using UNBell immediately.
Do not use UNBell if a side plate, handle, locking component or other structural part appears cracked, damaged or unable to secure properly. Contact support@unbell.com for assistance.
Purchasing & Ownership
Can I add more weight later?
Yes.
One of the advantages of the UNBell system is that you do not have to purchase your maximum configuration on day one. Additional UNBars and compatible accessories can be added later.
What's the difference between the UNBell packages?
Every package starts with the same core UNBell.
The primary difference is the number and type of UNBars and accessories included. Larger packages give you a wider weight range and more loading configurations from the start.
Do I need two UNBells?
No. A single UNBell can be used for a large range of unilateral, bilateral, dumbbell-style and kettlebell-style exercises.
Some customers may prefer two UNBells for traditional two-dumbbell exercises, alternating work or paired training.
Is UNBell intended for commercial gyms?
UNBell is currently designed and warranted for consumer use.

What warranty does UNBell include?
UNBell includes a transferable limited warranty:
- 10 years on covered steel components
- 3 years on other covered components
